Access over decades, if not centuries, to materials that are being
created in digital form is essential to ensure the accountability of
e-government and enable the development of new forms of e-commerce from exploitation of digital broadcasts to e-health or e-science data. Studies demonstrate that few organisations have any idea about how to manage their digital assets effectively. The factors that can result in asset loss are numerous, and the tools and services to mitigate such loss limited. Studies conducted under the auspices of European Commission projects, the NSF (US), and UNESCO indicate the need for more and increasingly sophisticated digital preservation services, tools (e.g. computer forensics), and professionals if we are to reduce the uncertainty and risk associated with digital materials. This session provides an opportunity to explore with leading experts the possibilities for collaborative research and development in the context of the Seventh Framework Programme. PLANETS, DigitalPreservationEurope (DPE), and CASPAR are pleased to announce that they will be delivering a joint one-day workshop to introduce the aims of their specific digital preservation projects and to discuss their overall relevance within the context of the European Commission Information Science and Technologies Framework Programme 6. This event is being held in conjunction with the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) and will be held at the Hilton Glasgow Hotel on November 23rd, 2006 immediately following the 2nd Annual DCC Conference.
