The herbarium held by the Linnean Society of London is the single most important Linnaean collection of plant specimens, as well as the largest. It contains some 14,300 specimens, many pre-dating Linnaeus' seminal work, Species Plantarum (1753). More than 4,000 of these are type specimens for Linnaean names and include plants from Asia, Europe and the Americas collected during a time of intense exploration of new lands. To provide worldwide online access to its priceless collections of specimens, manuscripts and letters, the Society is creating a digital archive of over 12 Terabytes of unique material, under the overall title of the Linnean Society Collections Online (previously the CARLS Programme - Computer Access to the Records of the Linnean Society). Some collections are already available and more shall be added in due course. The next collection to be added is the Insect Collection.The Herbarium is currently the only collection available directly through the digital repository.

The repository provides free worldwide access to digital scholarly publications of University of Liverpool researchers and their affiliates whilst respecting the copyright policies of publishers. The research archive is currently at the pilot stage with researchers from nine selected departments contributing. The full service shall become available in 2008.

The Centre for Editing Lives and Letters (CELL) is a Research Centre funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Established in July 2002, CELL develops archive-based research projects of relevance to the period 1500 - 1800. The site contains e-prints and links to the various projects the organisation runs.
