AGAMEMNON researched how to exploit 3G mobile phones equipped with embedded cameras for enhancing visits of open-air archaeological sites and museums. These devices can provide visitors with enriched and personalised multimedia information ((pictures, video, audio, text) on monuments. The system developed by the project also combines functions to optimise the visit path and to contribute to the protection of the site by sending images to site guardians.

AIDA will create a self-assessment tool for describing institutional readiness and capabilities for digital preservation. The tool will take into account different states of institutional preparedness when recommending options or highlighting threats to assets.

The JISC-funded project "Automated Archiving for an Institutional Repository" aims to develop an information extraction system allowing for speedy discovery and extraction of bibliographical data from semi-structured text. The system will be integrated with the WIRE ("Wolverhampton Intellectual Repository and E-theses") repository, but it will be designed in a way to facilitate easy adoption of the software by other institutions that use different data encoding standards. The project is carried out jointly by Research Institute in Information and Language Processing (ILP) and the Learning Information Services (LIS) of the University of Wolverhampton

Asset Management Integration of Cultural heritage In The Interchange between Archives

AMICITIA aims at building the base for a continued and viable digital preservation of and access to television and video content through the construction of various vital components enabling a digital archiving system to serve all required roles in ingest, management, access and distribution of audiovisual material. A special focus is placed on enabling remote, multilingual access to archive content stored in a distributed environment. To reach these goals, AMICITIA will build its innovative technologies - a rights management database, a multilingual access tool, a digitisation and digital storage management facility and a secure public access mechanism - on top of existing digital archiving technology. Project from Netherlands, internal project of the University Library Groningen together with Documentation Centre for Dutch Political Parties (DNPP).The Archipol project involves the archiving of web sites produced by political parties in the Netherlands. The aim of the project is to make the digital archive available on-line, and discussions are currently being held with the parties to decide exactly howthis will be done. The project is also designed as a pilot study. The experiences and results of the project will be used to develop a general model that can be used by other institutions for archiving web sites.

The research institute Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) plans the gradual implementation of the service "Metrological Services Online (MELODI)" application procedure for testing, approval, and accreditation of equipment, laboratories and procedures". For the documents received and prepared in this connection (e.g. applications, manufacturer's documents, certificates, test results, official notifications etc.), widely varying compulsory periods of record-keeping (10 years, 30 years or longer) apply. For a continuous electronic, uninterrupted media business process it is thus indispensable to create an archival solution for the electronic filing of legally binding and invoice-founding documents.

In the 'ArchiSig' project, archiving concepts and technologies are taken up and extended in a way that will allow secure and conclusive long-term archiving of digitally generated and signed data for 30 years or more. This involves the development of system architectures with new technical components and organizational concepts to guarantee the security of digital signatures. The solutions have to be practical, costeffective and in accordance to legislation in order to allow their deployment in various areas of the society.

The applicability of the concepts will be proved by the implementation and evaluation of a prototype in the Heidelberg University Medical Center and in other health care institutions, by comparative analyses in the public administration and the administration of justice of the federal state Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) as well as by expert's reports on the basis of fictitious legal cases.

The project will address two complementary aspects of access management for virtualised resources in iRODS data grids: access control that allows fine-grained access rights to be defined for roles, not just user identities and capture and recording of provenance metadata that tracks access to resources.
These issues will be addressed by integrating Shibboleth with iRODS (software system for digital libraries and persistent archives), enabling authentication of a user to be devolved onto the user’s home institution, and authorisation to be based on Shibboleth attributes. The enhanced software will be incorporated into a prototype data
grid and made available for evaluation by users, and in particular by the NGS.

This project will develop a tool for ingesting complex collections of digital archives (which consist of several types of digital object) into preservation repositories by supplying digital objects with preservation metadata extracted from existing tools and packaging this in METS files. The tool will also add relationship metadata to these METS files to ensure that important contextual relationships expressed in the hierarchy of the digital archive are not lost during the ingest and preservation process.

CALIMERA - Cultural Applications: Local Institutions Mediating Electronic Resource Access. Working with a network of support groups, practitioners, national authorities and suppliers in 42 countries, the Co-ordination Action CALIMERA has produced a vast array of resources and made them available through its website. Key products include reports on every country in the network, guidelines for local cultural institutions on social, management and technical issues underlying digital service delivery, a solutions noticeboard for local cultural institutions providing information emerging from the industrial and research sectors, a research roadmap and other documents and tools.

CASPAR - Cultural, Artistic and Scientific Knowledge Preservation, for Access and Retrieval.

CASPAR set out to build components for a preservation infrastructure which user communities can use to share the cost of preserving their digital resources and which advances the state of the art in digital preservation.

A major component of the work encompassed by the Cedars project is the development of a metadata framework which will enable the long-term preservation of digital resources. This metadata is required to support meaningful access to the archived digital content and includes descriptive, administrative, technical and legal information.

Cedars began in April 1998 and ended in March 2002. Its broad objective was to explore digital preservation issues. These range through acquiring digital objects, their long-term retention, sufficient description, and eventual access.

Cultural Heritage Language Technologies: A Collaborative Project to Create Computational Tools For The Study of Ancient Greek, Early Modern Latin, and Old Norse In A Network of Affiliated Digital Libraries (IST-2001-32745)

A SLIC funded project aiming to establish, document, and disseminate guidelines for best practice in the choice and use of CMS metadata for the management of simple and complex digital objects in an interoperable Scottish Common Information Environment.

The R&D project COLLATE (IST-1999-20882) was funded by the EU within the "Digital Heritage and Cultural Content" activities. It ran from September 2000 until the end of 2003.

Within COLLATE we designed, implemented and evaluated in real life a highly innovative Web-based collaboratory for archives, researchers and end-users working with digitized historic material.

CONTRAPUNCTUS - Preservation and unification of new and existing Braille Music digital sources for a new access methodology. CONTRAPUNCTUS will design and develop an online library enabling visually impaired musicians to benefit fully from digital Braille music scores.

COVAX - Contemporary Culture Virtual Archive in XML
The purpose of COVAX is to analyse and draw up the technical solutions required to provide access through the Internet to homogeneously-encoded document descriptions of archive, library and museum collections based in the application of SGML/XML. The project will demonstrate its feasibility through a prototype containing a meaningful sample of all the different types of documents to build a global system for search and retrieval. It is based on the assumption that in libraries, archives and museums an enormous number of descriptions could be made available over the Internet by converting existing records or by creating new ones to specific SGML/XML DTD's.

The project will develop equipment for the direct fast capture of paintings, with a new ultra-high definition multi-spectral scanner (ultraviolet to infrared) with a homogeneous lighting system. Software will be developed that uses a new colour chart and illumination correction to calibrated multi-spectral images. Research will be conducted into spectrometric analysis of varnish layers to allow the effect of an aged varnish to be substracted from an image of a painting. Large format, colour-accurate prints will assist in the restoration of paintings and be of use in exhibitions as surrogates for fragile works of art. Studies will be made of the long-term durability of storage media and of archiving techniques. A bi-lingual electronic handbook will be published on the web. Paintings will be captured, archived for long-term preservation, electronically restored, printed for exhibition and used for demonstration purposes.

DAAT: Digital Asset Assessment Tool.

This project developed a digital preservation assessment tool for use within the UK HE/FE and research, learning and teaching communities.

The Data Audit Framework was conceived in direct response to recommendations made by Liz Lyon in the seminal JISC-commissioned report Dealing with Data: ‘a framework must be conceived to enable all Universities and colleges to carry out an audit of departmental data collections, awareness, policies and practice for data curation and preservation.’ The aim of the DAF development project is to create such a Framework adapted to the current needs of data curation activities in UK HE institutions. The project will develop an audit methodology and supporting online toolkit to enable institutions to discover what data they hold, where it is located, and who is (or is not) responsible for it. A registry component will also be provided to allow results to be shared with other institutions in a controlled environment.

The Framework and online tool will be tested in four implementation projects running at UCL, KCL, Imperial College London and Edinburgh University.

The DCC SCARP Project will investigate disciplinary attitudes and approaches to data deposit, sharing and re-use, curation and preservation. It will do this through a range of methods, combining traditional survey/literature review approaches with up to 10 immersive case studies in selected discipline areas. The result will be a significant increase in understanding of this critical area, documented in a number of reports.

DELOS has integrated European research in the field of digital libraries. The project's work included research on library architectures, information access and personalisation, audio-visual and non traditional objects, user interfaces, knowledge extraction, semantic interoperability, preservation and evaluation. The project aimed to survey current research activities, identify gaps, and propose future research directions in the area of digital preservation. These include repository architectures and inter-operability among digital archives; automated tools for capture, ingest, and normalization of digital objects; and harmonization of preservation formats and metadata. Also opportunities for development of commercial products for mass storage systems, repositories and repository management systems, and data management software and tools.

The Depot2 project provides a national facility for the deposition of post-prints under terms of Open Access5
for those academic authors in the UK higher education without an institutional facility. This will bridge the gap between those institutions that already have a repository and those institutions that have yet to develop one.
The Depot2 also provides UK Repository Junction, as part of a user-friendly 'reception' for the Depot, that will provide redirect options when there is a more appropriate repository already in existence.

EU project, an IST Support Measure. Project benefiting the cultural heritage sector, through monitoring and assessing existing and emerging technologies that provide opportunities to optimize the development, access to, and preservation of Europe's rich cultural and scientific heritage. Building on the knowledge and expertise of over 50 cultural heritage experts, DigiCULT discusses and analyzes current and future trends in several technology domains that have been identified as key areas during the study.

The initial three year project to develop a national Digital Curation Centre (DCC) is a key aim of the JISC Continuing Access and Digital Preservation Strategy 2002-05. The DCC will focus on research in data curation, file format information, tools, testbeds and certification and advisory services. Funded jointly by JISC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's (EPSRC) e-Science Core Programme, to focus on the needs of UK FE and HE, but with the possibility of extending to, and developing additional funding from, other sectors.

DigitalPreservationEurope(DPE), building on the earlier successful work of ERPANET, facilitates pooling of the complementary expertise that exists across the academic research, cultural, public administration and industry sectors in Europe. This Coordination Action will help bring strategic information to stakeholders and user organisations concerned with the long-term preservation of digital resources. The project will spread knowledge of crucial technological issues, facilitate the pooling of complementary existing expertise, contribute to audit and certification standards and enable training and collaboration services. DPE also intends to foster coordination between existing national initiatives, and to improve consistency in preservation activities.

DISC-UK DataShare arises from an existing UK consortium of data support professionals working
in departments and academic libraries in universities (Data Information Specialists Committee-UK), and builds on an international network with a tradition of data sharing and data archiving dating back to the 1960s in the social sciences. By working together across four universities
and internally with colleagues already engaged in managing open access repositories for e-prints,
this partnership will introduce and test a new model of data sharing and archiving to UK research institutions.
By supporting academics within the four partner institutions who wish to share datasets
on which written research outputs are based, this network of institution-based data repositories
develops a niche model for deposit of ‘orphaned datasets’ currently filled neither by centralised
subject-domain data archives/centres/grids nor by e-print based institutional repositories (IRs).

Project from Switzerland, granted by the Schweizerischen Nationalfonds.The goal of this project is to develop and establish an archival system for digital data with focus on long-term archival as required by archives and museums which preserve the audiovisual heritage of our time. The fundamental idea is that institutions with long-term archival needs of digital data collaborate in order to build a geographically distributed, internet based archival system. The archival network will be implemented as a distributed, self-organizing and optimized peer-to-peer (P2P) network with a high redundancy. The data to be archived will be distributed in redundant copies among all participants’ parties. It will be assumed that the data will be transported over untrusted channels and stored on untrusted nodes. Therefore, strong cryptography will be used to guarantee the integrity and privacy of the archived digital assets.

Completed British Library pilot project to investigate viability of selective web archiving. The deliverables included a small collection of 100 web sites, captured a number of times, and some focused experience in the issues surrounding web archiving. The project ran from 2001-2 and was funded from existing resources.

EASAIER - Enabling Access to Sound Archives through Integration, Enrichment and Retrieval. EASAIER focuses on several key areas to improve access to sound archives: multi and cross- media retrieval, interactivity tools, integration of speech and music processing methods, and systemic archive analysis. The project will develop innovative audio processing, data mining, and visualisation techniques, alongside user needs and evaluation studies, and integrate them into prototypes. One research objective is to improve the separation and representation of sound objects from audio signals. Another objective of EASAIER is to provide online interactive tools for end-users and enrich the browsing experience. Features developed in this respect will be for example time-stretching, allowing to slow down (or speed up) recordings without modifying the pitch, or transcription of a piece of music into score notation systems for specific instruments. EDLproject was a Targeted Project funded by the European Commission under the eContentplus Programme and coordinated by the German National Library. The project, started in September 2006 and completed in February 2008, worked towards the integration of the bibliographic catalogues and digital collections of the National Libraries of Belgium, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain and Sweden, into The European Library. EDLproject also addressed the enhancement of multilingual capabilities of The European Library portal, took first steps towards collaboration between The European Library and other non-library cultural initiatives, and expanded the marketing and communication activities of The European Library service. Study and Digitisation of Italian Emblem Books in the Stirling Maxwell Collection of the Glasgow University Library

EMBRACE will enhance the SHERPA-LEAP hosted repositories by improving the service architecture and by migrating the partner repositories from EPrints 2.3 to EPrints 3. The Eprints Application Profile will be implemented for the hosted repositories, and advocated to the other LEAP partners. A tool to embed citations and other information into the text of eprints at deposit will be developed, implemented for the EPrints repositories within the consortium, and made available on an open source basis to the community. A training programme will be arranged to support these technical measures.

The aim of the emulation project of the KB is to develop a new preservation strategy based on emulation. Our goal is to build an emulator that is durable and able to replace the Reference Workstation (RWS, a modern computer environment using MS Windows 2000 that is used as a reference for what the emulator should be capable of. See figure 1). As a consequence, all kinds of digital material, like multimedia programs, databases and PDF documents will remain accessible in the long term.

Within KMi, we are building on our existing technologies supporting web-based collaboration, agents, and knowledge modelling, to develop tools and methodologies for integrating working and learning within knowledge-intensive organisations. Our approach is aimed at the following objectives:
* Supporting individuals and groups to continually reflect on and improve their work practices.
* Supporting distributed groups to share best practices and improve their coordination efforts.
* Promoting the establishment of `virtual centres of excellence' by bringing people with relevant expertise together across time and geography. These serve to identify core competencies and nurture their further development.

EPOCH is a Network of Excellence combining expertise and resources of technologists, cultural heritage professionals and communication experts concerned with the effective and sustainable application of digital technology to archaeological research and cultural heritage presentation at museums, monuments and historic sites.

The European Commission funded ERPANET Project will establish an expandable European Consortium, which will make viable and visible information, best practice and skills development in the area of digital preservation of cultural heritage and scientific objects. ERPANET will bring together memory organisations (museums, libraries and archives), ICT and software industry, research institutions, government organisations (including local ones), entertainment and creative industries, and commercial sectors (including for example pharmaceuticals, petro-chemical, and financial). The dominant feature of ERPANET will be the provision of a virtual clearinghouse and knowledge-base on state-of-the-art developments in digital preservation and the transfer of that expertise among individuals and institutions.

EthnoArc - Linked European Archives for Ethnomusicological Research. EthnoArc focuses on digital European archives for ethnomusicological research, a comparative science dealing with oral music traditions. Typically, an ethnographic field collection consists of a multi-format, unpublished body of materials gathered and organised by an anthropologist, folklorist, ethnomusicologist, or other cultural researcher. The collection may contain materials from a wide range of formats, including sound recordings, drawings, photographs, field notes, and correspondence. Electronic representations of ethnographic collections make it possible for researchers to explore the various resources without risking to damage originals and in the context of other materials. However, the use of existing digital archives is limited by the fact that they were developed independently and apply different metadata structures, making comparisons of data almost impossible.

Europeana: digital paintings, books, films and archives
Europeana – the European digital library, museum and archive – is a 2-year project that began in July 2007. It will produce a prototype website giving users direct access to some 2 million digital objects, including film material, photos, paintings, sounds, maps, manuscripts, books, newspapers and archival papers. The prototype will be launched in November 2008 by Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media.

EVIE is a two year project funded by JISC. It is part of the VRE programme which aims to build and deploy Virtual Research Environments through currently available tools and frameworks or by developing new ones for the UK research community. EVIE (Embedding a VRE in an Institutional Environment) is made up of a partnership of the University of Leeds Library, the British Library, Virtual Knowledge Park, and Bodington.org. Its initial focus is on a research test-base across Geography, Medicine, and the White Rose Grid. The project will develop a prototype online environment to aid and assist researchers from all disciplines. By presenting the right tools in an appropriate context, this environment will streamline routine activities, provide easier access to complex systemss, and enable effective collaboration.

FILM RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION STRATEGIES
Thanks to a complex and articulated program of activities, meetings, workshops and research, scheduled over a two-year period, the Project FIRST aimed at creating the conditions to produce sets of standards or "recommended practices" for the digitalisation of archival materials for the some specific uses - mainly for conservation, restoration, access/low resolution distribution.
There are five main areas of interest for the FIRST project: 1) Archival film digitisation, 2) Restoration by digital processes for different uses, 3) Storage technologies and policies of digitized archives, 4) Cataloguing and retrieval of digitised film archives with focus on on-line management and retrieval, 5) Strategies for distribution and access of digitised archive material with focus on on-line management and delivery.

Dioscuri has been developed by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (national library of the Netherlands) and Nationaal Archief of the Netherlands, with support from software company Tessella Support Services plc. Initial ideas about Dioscuri started at the end of 2004 as part of developing a strategy for digital preservation to ensure that interactive applications (like games and other digital objects) would remain accessible for the long term.
In 2005 the project team was founded and a special design for a durable and flexible emulator has been created. In 2006 and 2007 Dioscuri has been build step by step following the official specifications for various hardware components.

Currently, development is continued under the umbrella of Planets, a major European project on digital preservation. With the launch of Dioscuri in July 2007 to the open source community, the team aims to gain better support and contributions from the community.

This JISC funded project aimed to '...develop and test a hybrid model for depositing institutional assets that provides a bridge between the complexity (and burdens) of full 'traditional' deposit of institutional collections and the more simplified approach embodied in harvesting methodology. The Hybrid Archives model takes elements of both traditional deposit methodology and harvesting methodology and re-works them to produce an integrated and cohesive deposit model...'. Also described as '...an extensible and sustainable 'partial deposit' model...'.

IMAGINATION - Image-based Navigation in Multimedia Archives.

IMAGINATION aims to ease knowledge gain from digital cultural and scientific resources by enabling navigation through images and their context.
Point of departure for IMAGINATION is that the human brain is more efficient in processing information in visual than in textual form and that knowledge is generated not from single information items but from information in context. The project's research goal is thus to explore how information systems could become more performing in supporting image-based and context-aware interaction.

This project brings together centres of competence in large-scale text digitisation in order to share know-how and best practices and to develop innovative tools enhancing the capabilities of OCR engines and the accessibility of digitised text and to lay down the foundations for future mass-digitisation programmes. IMPACT is funded under the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission (FP7). It is part of the Cooperation Work Programme for ICT and responds to the fourth challenge in this programme: Digital Libraries and Content.

This project will deliver a repository which will serve a prioritised set of needs of Leeds Metropolitan University. The project will build on experience from the sector in creating an open access collection of materials, based on open standards, which will increase the profile of the research outputs and/or pioneering assessment learning and teaching work carried out at Leeds Met, and also make a significant contribution to the experience of learners in the institution.

Project led by the Bibliotheque Nationale de France with partners including national libraries from Europe, North America and Australasia and the Internet Archive. The consortium aims to develop an automated web crawler to search the web for sites relevant to an agreed collection development policy. Other issues addressed will include the definition of a basic crawler, the minimum functionality required for larger libraries such as the BL to crawl their entire country domain and developing intelligent selective collection.
