The Austrian National library has a dedicated Digital Preservation Team which has the remit to coordinate the library’s digital preservation activities. The key responsibilities include:

- Coordination of digital preservation within the Austrian National Library, design and implementation of internal and external workflows
- Implementation of a trustworthy archive for digital long term preservation
- Design of preservation plans for digital content which will be stored in the digital archive
- Establishment of collection and selection criteria for digital resources
- Risk assessment and capacity planning
- Design of guidelines for depositors
- Collaboration with Austrian universities and research institutes (archiving of electronic theses and research papers)
- Collaboration with the Federal Chancellery and stakeholder groups in preparing an amendment of the Austrian Media Law (legal deposit for online media expected for 2008)
- Preparation of a web archiving programme (to be expected for 2008)
- Implementation of a digital preservation testbed environment (part of the EC co-funded project PLANETS)
- Managing assignment of persistent identifiers for digital objects (in cooperation with the German National Library)
- Participation in national and international projects
- Cooperation with other organisations
