The Faculty of Communication at Vilnius University was created in 1991. The concentration of scattered study programs into one unit was stimulated by the wish to create and develop a basic framework for Communication and Information Science education and research in Lithuania. Today, the Faculty of Communication has as its main purpose to strengthen and fasten interdisciplinary studies and research in order to promote competitive and high quality education in the field. Mission of the Faculty is realized through communication and information study programs, basic and applied research, and continuing professional development opportunities, and particularly through interdisciplinary and international cooperation.
The Faculty of Communication:
• develops human and intellectual resources for the communication and information sector.
• creates and disseminate knowledge of the field necessary for social economic and cultural development of the society.
• provides the widest scope of communication and information study programs in Lithuania.
• offers three levels of studies: undegratuate, postgraduate and doctoral.
• has 53 employees: 40 academic staff and 13 auxiliary staff.
• Has 4 departments: Department of Information and Communication, Institute of Documentation and Book Science, Institute of Journalism, Institute of Library and Information Science.
Research Areas
The Faculty is engaged at researching mass media transformations, development and integration of memory institutions, book and cultural heritage studies, information management, information resources and information retrieval, analyzing political, mass media, political, organizational, international and other contexts of communication. Research is directed by interdisciplinary approach and collaborative attitude.

• Analysis of Information and Communication Processes and Models in Knowledge Society
• Changes of the Lithuanian mass media system in 1995-2007
• Lithuanian book history and book culture
Projects
Currently the faculty takes part in projects:

• Development of the Knowledge and Competence Evaluation System in Vilnius University: Establishment of Vilnius University Examination Centre. (EU Structural Funds, 2006-2008. Joint project of Vilnius University Faculties of Communication, Economics, Law and Physics).
• Preservation of National Identity under Globalisation: Renewal of the Doctoral Study Programs and Development of the Postgraduate Studies Model. (EU Structural Funds, 2006-2008. Joint project of Vilnius University Faculties of Communication, Economics, Phylology, Phylosophy, History and the Institute of International Relations and Political Sciences).
